Welcome to The Imp Guide!
"85 percent of the general population believed that the Internet was good for economy, but 57 percent could not explain what the Internet was" (CNN)
That's where this guide comes in.
Hopefully, it will be able to:
- Show you around the Internet
- Explain the basics behind email, newsgroups, IRC and the World Wide Web
- Give you some basic commands that will help you use the tools of the Internet more effectively
- Point you in the direction of people who can help you if you ever get lost
- Give you a glimpse of what the Internet may actually look like.
How are we going to do all of this?
Well, each one of these guide sections on the right-hand menu bar is designed give you a glimpse of one small part of the Internet.
I can offer you particular tools and sites, point out a few traps to avoid, and even show you some basic commands that will help you use the tools to your own advantage.
In the end, I hope that you will gain a better understanding of the individual parts and pieces that, when put together, make up the Internet.
Moving around this guide
You can move around by selecting any words that are:
- Displayed in a different colour and underlined within the main page content.
- In the site menu bar (if you are viewing this site in a graphical browser, that's probably the column on the right).
Look out for words that are underlined with a dashed line. Placing your mouse, or cursor, over these words will cause a little window to appear containing a short hint or explanation. Moving your mouse, or cursor, away from the underlined words will cause the window to disappear again.
